What Should My
HYROX Run Pace Be?

The most common question from first-time HYROX athletes — and the hardest to answer without data. This guide gives you exact target pace per kilometer for every division (Open Men, Open Women, Pro) at every competitive tier, from first-timer Finisher to Elite podium contender.

Short answer

For a competitive Open Men finish (~1:20), target 4:45–5:00 /km on fresh legs, dropping to 5:15–5:30 /km on km 6–8 as fatigue accumulates. For a first-time Finisher (~2:00), target 6:00–6:30 /km across all 8km.

Why HYROX Run Pace ≠ Open Running Pace

HYROX is not a road race. You run 8km total — but each kilometer happens immediately after a high-intensity workout station that drains your legs, spikes your lactate, and compromises your running mechanics.

−30s/km

Average pace loss on km 1–2 vs open 10K pace, as the body transitions from fresh legs to post-station compromised running.

−60s/km

Peak slowdown on km 5–7 (after Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jump, Rowing). Lactate is high, quads are fried.

+4 min

Typical time lost in the Roxzone across 8 transitions for an Average-level athlete. That's 60s/km of "free" running pace.

Open Men — Run Pace by Tier

Target finish times + per-km pace for each competitive tier

TierTarget FinishPace /kmRun ShareNotes
Finisher2:00 – 2:306:15 – 6:45 /km~55% of total timeFirst-time HYROX athletes or those prioritizing completion over ranking. Walk breaks between stations are expected. Roxzone tends to run 10–14 minutes.
Average1:30 – 2:005:15 – 6:00 /km~54% of total timeRecreational athletes with a consistent training base (3–4 sessions/week). Able to hold a steady jog between stations but lose 20–30s/km on later rounds due to accumulated fatigue.
Competitive1:15 – 1:304:30 – 5:15 /km~53% of total timeAge-group podium contenders with strong aerobic base and trained transitions. Hold a 22–24 min 5K open pace but must manage compromised-running pace on km 4–8.
Elitesub 1:104:00 – 4:30 /km~52% of total timeProfessional or semi-professional athletes. Roxzone under 4 minutes total. Run pace within 15–20s/km of open 10K pace despite 4 prior stations.

Open Women — Run Pace by Tier

Target finish times + per-km pace for each competitive tier

TierTarget FinishPace /kmRun ShareNotes
Finisher2:15 – 2:456:45 – 7:15 /km~55% of total timeFirst-time HYROX women or those completing for the experience. Run/walk mix between stations is standard.
Average1:45 – 2:155:45 – 6:30 /km~54% of total timeRecreational women athletes with consistent training. Hold 5K open pace of ~28–32 min and translate that into steady HYROX run pace.
Competitive1:30 – 1:455:00 – 5:45 /km~53% of total timeAge-group podium material. Strong aerobic engine and trained transitions. Manage fatigue on Wall Balls (final station) while holding pace.
Elitesub 1:254:30 – 5:00 /km~52% of total timeProfessional women. Roxzone under 5 minutes. Run within 20–25s/km of open 10K pace across all 8km.

How to Use This Guide

  1. 1.
Pick your tier above based on your recent 10K time or race experience.
  2. 2.
Open the Running Pace Calculator and enter your target finish time + HYROX 8km preset to get an exact per-km pace table.
  3. 3.
Open the Station Calculator to get per-station target times calibrated to your division.
  4. 4.
Open the Target Pace Calculator on the homepage to combine everything into a full race-day blueprint — and download a wristband pace card.

Race-Day Pacing Strategy

✓ Do

  • • Hold back 10–15s/km on km 1–2 (adrenaline trap)
  • • Settle into target pace on km 3–5
  • • Empty the tank on km 6–8 (finish line in sight)
  • • Walk through hydration stations, jog out
  • • Count reps, not seconds, on each station

✗ Don't

  • • Sprint km 1 because the crowd is loud
  • • Stop completely in the Roxzone (keep moving)
  • • Race other athletes on the run — race your plan
  • • Skip warm-up (the first run is already compromised)
  • • Chase a pace you held in training without stations

HYROX Run Pace — FAQ

The most common questions about HYROX run pacing, directly answered with data from the 2026/27 rulebook and real race results.

If your open 10K is ~50 minutes, target 6:00–6:30 /km in HYROX. If your 10K is ~40 min, target 5:15–5:45 /km. Your first HYROX run pace will always be 30–60s/km slower than your open 10K pace due to accumulated fatigue from the stations. Use the Running Pace Calculator to convert your target finish time directly to per-km pace for the 8km HYROX distance.
